Ensuring the Success of FF&E Artwork Installation

As we embark on the journey of crafting turnkey art consulting packages for the contract & hospitality industry, Art Firm recognizes more than ever the importance of meticulous attention to detail throughout every stage of a project – from conceptualization to installation.

Our creative process for each project initiates with ideation, research, meticulous planning, execution, and launch. However, the journey doesn’t conclude there! The installation of art pieces is a crucial step in their impact. It constitutes an art form in itself, as it involves careful consideration of placement, lighting, and the interaction between the artwork and its environment. Each installation decision profoundly  influences the viewer's experience, evoking emotions and engaging their senses. With thoughtful placement and attention to detail, we can create moments of awe and inspiration within our spaces.

Key tips for Successful Artwork Installation

Let's delve deeper into the installation process. Every aspect of installing and displaying a new artwork demands careful consideration. Even the seemingly easy task of hanging a painting on a wall requires your complete attention and care. The slightest mistake can turn into a disaster and potentially end up being costly.

To avoid these challenges, we provide you with essential rules to consider before embarking on the installation process:

Line of Sight

Central to successful art installation is ensuring optimal visual alignment. It's imperative to position the artwork at eye level. At the Art Firm, we recommend maintaining a distance of approximately 62 inches from the floor to the artwork's center for optimal viewing, and 6-12 inches above standard furniture. Nevertheless, discretion should be exercised based on wall dimensions, and furniture placement.

When on location, its important to make the decision on what is your wall center - considering architectural elements, such as emergency lights, outlets, etc. that void your perfect center, work with it - not against it. The key is to create balance with the artwork installed. You want to draw the eye to a focal point, so it is important to be considerant. Even when arranging multiple pieces -or- gallery walls, the lowest artwork should be positioned at a height conducive to effortless viewing, and the separation between pieces should be reasonable 2-3 inches max. - unless intentionally making a dramatic statement.

Last but not least, Door frames and Windows - try to hang the pieces under the both - unless you have #1 - high ceilings and oversized walls #2 - a large enough artwork meant to be dramatic.

Lighting and Moisture Considerations

Lighting is a further consideration for the placement of an artwork in any given space. When arranging artwork in various interiors, thinking about where natural light might hit an artwork is important from a preservation perspective. To safeguard against potential damage, artworks should be installed away from direct sunlight. It's also important to inspect walls for any signs of dampness or flaking, as moisture can harm the integrity of paintings or photographs, even if they're securely backed.

To mitigate risks further, choose properly framed artworks with UV-protective materials if needed. Ensure that the backing is made of moisture-resistant materials. Regularly check the artwork and hardware for any signs of wear or damage to maintain their longevity. Diligent care and maintenance

Fixing Considerations

Paying attention to fixings is a technical detail that will also make a crucial difference to the way your collection is installed in a space. Prioritize the use of a security hardware, whether personally or by engaging professional art handlers. The chosen hardware should be robust enough to support the weight and dimensions of the artwork.

At Art Firm, our team of professionals are expert framers, utilizing premium security hardware, ensuring longevity and minimizing the risk of damage. Standard wire hanging systems are unsuitable for safeguarding artworks, so it’s recommended to implement a robust hanging system that allows for easy movement of artworks within a space.

Location/Environment Considerations

Selecting art tailored to specific environments is crucial for creating harmonious spaces. Take a step back and look at the piece – get a sense of proportions, colors and see how it looks with all other elements you have in your space. Don’t forget to consider the space and furniture around your art. Artworks and furniture should complement each other in a space.

Different settings need different approaches. For instance, the artwork chosen for a Healthcare corridor will differ from that of a Multi-Family dwelling. Understanding the unique requirements of each setting enables the installation of art packages that resonate with the intended audience.

In essence, the proper installation and maintenance of art not only safeguard artwork but also reflect a deep respect for artistic expression. From ensuring optimal visual alignment and addressing lighting and moisture concerns to prioritizing the use of secure fixings and tailoring art selection to specific environments, each aspect contributes to the creation of harmonious spaces that resonate with their intended audience.

Some of these guidelines, utilized by Art Firm during an installation, are meant to create a smooth turnkey art consulting experience. We aim to exceed client expectations and inspire creativity in every project, and trust these guidelines will prove valuable to others, contributing to the success of their FF&E artwork installations.
